Keeping the pets happy

The optimum tank temperature is 25oC.

The external temperature is 20oC.

You may ignore heat losses into the air above the water but not through the tank top, and the energy needed to heat the turtles. Assume negligible heat losses through the base.

What should the power rating of the heater be to maintain the temperature inside the water ?

If the heater breaks, how long before the water inside the tank cools to the same temperature as the air outside ?

Data:

density of water 1000kgm-3

specific heat capacity of water 4200Jkg-1oC-1

U-value of glass 5.0Wm-2oC-1

U-value of top of tank 3.0Wm-2oC-1
